What it is for
Chyawanprash is a traditional fruit-and-herb paste, often called an Ayurvedic jam. Its dense base combines amla, jaggery, ghee and sesame oil with a blend of fresh herbs. On the spoon, it has a rich, thick consistency; sweetness is balanced by fresh tartness and spice. Enjoy it on its own or use it to prepare a warm drink.
In Ayurveda, Chyawanprash belongs to the Rasayana tradition, preparations associated with renewal, balance and long-term vitality. Fushi presents this recipe as an original adaptogenic blend within a centuries-old ritual. This describes Ayurvedic tradition rather than establishing a specific health effect of the finished product.
Who it is for
- For anyone interested in traditional Ayurvedic recipes and a daily herbal ritual.
- For vegetarians; the blend contains milk-derived ghee and is not vegan.
- For those who prefer a dense paste to capsules and enjoy a sweet-tangy, spiced flavour.
An Ayurvedic recipe
fruit base
Fresh amla
Pulp from wild-harvested Amalaki fruit (Emblica officinalis), without concentrate or dried powder. Amla naturally contains vitamin C; the manufacturer does not specify the amount in the finished paste.
herbal recipe
30 Ayurvedic herbs
Fresh, whole herbs form the diverse foundation of the traditional blend. Cinnamon, cardamom and other aromatic ingredients complete its spiced flavour.
traditional preparation
Ghee
Pure ghee made from the milk of grass-fed cows and sourced from sustainable farms. In Ayurvedic preparation, it is used as an anupana, a traditional carrier for the herbal blend.
paste base
Jaggery and sesame oil
Jaggery provides sweetness and, together with ghee and sesame oil, is one of the foundational ingredients in this fruit-and-herb recipe.
Dosage and use
Take 1–2 teaspoons daily straight from the jar, or stir them into warm water or milk. Traditionally, the paste is taken on an empty stomach, ideally in the morning 30 minutes before breakfast. Always use a clean spoon.
Fushi's seasonal recommendation is 2 teaspoons in winter and 1 teaspoon during warmer months. Within Ayurvedic tradition, the blend is considered warming.
Ritual — what to pair it with
On its own: enjoy the paste straight from the spoon.
With milk: stir into warm milk or a plant-based drink; Ayurvedic tradition recommends this approach for the Pitta and Vata doshas.
With water: use warm water, traditionally recommended for the Kapha dosha.
A sensory ritual
In Kerala, women prepare the blend by hand using traditional Ayurvedic methods. The process begins with fresh, wild-harvested amla pulp. Herbs are cooked slowly over an open fire in bronze Uruli vessels, before ghee is worked into the blend. The finished paste is left to rest so the ingredients can come together. This careful preparation, beyond the ingredient list itself, is part of the recipe's character.
Storage and precautions
Store in a cool, dry place. Refrigeration is not required. Use within 6 months of opening and use a clean spoon every time.
According to the manufacturer, the blend is not suitable for children under 3. Consult your doctor before use if pregnant, breastfeeding, living with diabetes or taking medication. Contains sugar, a milk-derived ingredient and sesame.
