Description

Health benefits of Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha, also known as Indian ginseng and winter cherry, is a traditional Ayurvedic herb recommended by practitioners for stress relief and for a tired and depleted nervous system. It is valued as a rejuvenating herb and may help restore strength when recovering from a long-term illness.

In Ayurveda, Prana represents the force of life energy, and we infuse this philosophy into our products by using only organic herbs from this year's harvest. By using only the freshest ingredients, they retain their highest prana and life energy.

Detail

Fushi Ashwagandha blend

contains at least 7-10% withanolides. Withanolides are compounds in the root of Withania Somnifera (the Ashwagandha plant) and account for the herb's exceptional properties.

This blend also contains medium-chain triglycerides derived from coconut oil, which enhance the action of Ashwagandha. They also help with absorption and energy production. The rate of absorption is immensely important, and by increasing it we ensure that the blend is effective and has very high bioavailability. The blend also contains lemon balm, known for its nourishing and calming properties.

Fushi supplements are Fresh-Ground®, hand-blended and encapsulated in our London workshop. Our synergistic blends are formulated by our own experts. We use only natural ingredients, including herbs and raw superfoods, to create our distinctive blends. This innovative blend is a 100% plant-based formulation and is vegan, using medium-chain triglycerides derived from coconut oil.

Ashwagandha supports:

Ashwagandha is used to tone, support and revitalise bodily functions. Its dual properties, which both stimulate and calm the body, have been valued. Stress can cause fatigue, which often presents as a “wired state” and manifests as agitation or difficulty sleeping. By providing a nourishing, energising effect, ashwagandha may support a healthy nervous system. When ashwagandha is used, stress does not affect the nervous system with the same intensity, and the “wired state”, signs of stress and agitation naturally diminish over time. In this way, ashwagandha has a rejuvenating and calming influence on the nervous system and subsequently on the whole being. This adaptogenic quality makes ashwagandha a first-rate supplement for use in the process of toning and rejuvenating the body. In addition to its dual energising/calming action, ashwagandha offers a range of benefits:

  • Supports a healthy immune system
  • Calms mental processes
  • Supports healthy sleep patterns
  • Benefits a healthy reproductive system in both men and women
  • Supports sustained energy, strength and vitality, including physical activity
  • Supports a healthy back and joints
  • Supports thyroid health
  • Supports healthy adrenal function
Detail

Ashwagandha has become a subject of interest to many scientists, particularly because of its growing popularity.

It has been the subject of studies focusing on immune-system benefits, including possible immune support during radiation and chemotherapy.
Used in combination with liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Chlorophytum borivillanum and sesame seeds (Sesamum indicum), ashwagandha has been shown to support healthy cholesterol levels and antioxidant properties. Further studies concerning ashwagandha can be reviewed on PubMed.

Ashwagandha and Ayurveda

Ashwagandha is used in Ayurveda to balance excess vata and kapha; because of its warming, oily nature, it can cause a pitta imbalance and can also aggravate ama (toxic accumulation). Ayurveda particularly values ashwagandha for its building, strengthening and nourishing properties. It is used for the same reasons listed in the benefits section above, particularly to support healthy muscles and reproductive systems and to balance vata.

Discover why ashwagandha is one of the most respected and widely used adaptogens in Ayurvedic pharmacology.

How Ashwagandha is used, tips:

Traditionally used as a powder, ashwagandha can be mixed with water or warm milk and honey. Taken before bed, this mixture calms vata, supports healthy sleep patterns and the reproductive system, and builds strength. A general serving is 1 capsule (¼–½ teaspoon once or twice daily). Ashwagandha is traditionally taken with ghee and honey (equal quantities) as an anupan (a medium for carrying herbs deeper into the tissues) for overall nourishment and rejuvenation. When combining equal quantities, such as ½ teaspoon, this is acceptable, but remember to use equal weights of honey and ghee. Taking ashwagandha with sugar (cane or rapeseed) adds a cooling effect and can even replace honey, particularly in the summer months. It can also be used with ghee and sugar as a supplement to support the female reproductive system and joints.

Ashwagandha tea recipe
Ingredients:
½ teaspoon ashwagandha powder
1 cup hot water
1 teaspoon honey
Directions: Combine the hot water with the Ashwagandha powder and mix well. Add honey to taste. Sip and enjoy!

Ashwagandha tonic recipe
Ingredients:
1–2 teaspoons ashwagandha powder
2 cups milk
1 tablespoon raw sugar
⅛ teaspoon cardamom
Directions: Dissolve 1 to 2 teaspoons in 2 cups of milk and heat over low heat for 15 minutes. Add 1 tablespoon of raw sugar and ⅛ teaspoon of cardamom and stir until thoroughly mixed. Drink one cup once or twice daily as a tonic.
Contraindications
Large doses of ashwagandha can cause abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Ashwagandha was well tolerated in the small number of studies described.
Although the herb is traditionally used during pregnancy in India, Western medicine does not recommend taking it during pregnancy (because of its antispasmodic activity on the uterus and its induction of miscarriages in animals when administered in very large doses).

Fushi's Nuticeuticals are vegetarian-friendly and professionally formulated with 100% pure active ingredients in a bioavailable form for optimal absorption.
