Skin type & needs
What is most important for us women?
It has been proven that red light therapy improves skin appearance without any known side effects. Red light therapy increases blood flow to the skin, enhancing skin regeneration.
Additionally, red light activates stem cells around the skin, which then multiply into new skin cells. This leads to improvements in many skin processes, such as acne reduction, scar suppression, sunburn reduction, stretch mark prevention, and even burn healing.
Red light therapy can also improve skin conditions such as rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis.
The skin becomes firmer and smoother, the number and size of wrinkles decrease, and collagen density in the skin improves. The feel of the skin and skin tone also improve. Studies have shown that for the beneficial effects on the skin, you do not need as high a dose of red light therapy as for beneficial effects on deeper tissues.
There are hundreds, perhaps even thousands of peer-reviewed published studies proving the benefits of red light therapy.
Collagen Light Therapy
Red and infrared light affects energy production in all cells of the body, but it is most effective on the skin because the body's surface is surrounded by skin, making it the most accessible area for light therapy, which is good news for balancing collagen production and reducing wrinkles.
Why do we have wrinkles and aging skin?
Wrinkles and sagging skin seem to be a normal and inevitable part of aging, but there are well-known reasons why they occur. Various dietary and lifestyle factors either accelerate or slow their occurrence in the skin.
Cold weather - or cold in general - causes vasoconstriction in the body, which is the narrowing of blood vessels and diverts blood from the skin (to reduce heat loss). This leads to reduced moisture, heat, and metabolism in the skin, which over time leads to wrinkle formation. This is manifested by increased wrinkle formation in winter months, increased wrinkle formation in colder climates, and increased formation in people with low metabolic rates.
Heat - Not necessarily hot weather, but simply heat in general can contribute to skin aging. This can come from home heaters, open fires, furnaces, stoves, and even sunlight. Once the skin (and eyes) are warmed about 10 degrees above normal body temperature, cells no longer function properly. If the skin is repeatedly heated to significantly high temperatures, rapid photoaging occurs.
What is light therapy?
Light therapy is a term used to describe the action of light on the human organism.
Various types of light therapy are considered a non-invasive method that can help with various conditions such as wrinkles, aging, acne, damaged/dry skin, wound healing, SAD, depression, pain, inflammation, burns (including sunburn), and more.
The growing popularity of all types of light therapy is related to the claim that it is universally suitable regardless of skin type/colour and that it can potentially be used in conjunction with other treatments to enhance effects or reduce negative side effects.
For the human body to function, it needs energy. The main and most important thing red and infrared light does is provide energy to the cells. Mitochondria are the main energy-producing units in (human) cells, and for the human body to function, it needs energy. Cellular energy called ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Red light therapy affects these mitochondria by increasing the production of their main energy source called ATP.
Red light therapy not only improves the functioning of existing mitochondria but also helps create new mitochondria. This means that red light therapy can help increase energy over time thanks to new mitochondria.
Red Light and Health
First, let's consider how red light therapy can improve your health. Specifically, red light therapy can reduce inflammation, improve thyroid function, increase gym performance, support recovery, and optimise testosterone levels. I will address these topics in turn.
But first, a brief overview of how light affects the organism. As I touched on above, the body responds to light - different wavelengths of light create different effects on the body. It has been shown that the greatest biological response is triggered by light in the range from 600 nm to 900 nm (most of this range is covered by red light).
The energy from this light is absorbed by the body (according to the graph above) and through a series of metabolic processes, this light energy is converted into cellular energy. One of the benefits is, for example, the release of ATP - more ATP in the cell... better functioning of cells.
Below are some of the most common ways red light can aid the body in healing, recovery, and performance enhancement.
Usage:
For optimal therapy effect, we recommend being "illuminated" for 10 - 20 minutes daily from a distance of approximately 15 - 50 cm.
Here are the 7 most significant evidence-based benefits of devices using red light.
1. Collagen Production: Reduction of Wrinkles and Scars
Red light therapy boasts a long list of benefits (as you will see!). However, when people talk about RLT, they usually mean it in the context of skincare. RLT's ability to stimulate balanced collagen production makes it one of your skin's best friends.
Anti-Ageing As we age, our bodies stop producing collagen. This leads to all the common signs of ageing: wrinkles, sagging skin, and more. High collagen levels are crucial for soft, smooth, and firm skin. Unlike other skin treatments, such as intense pulsed light (IPL), RLT does not damage the skin or trigger tissue renewal. It directly stimulates skin rejuvenation and renewal.
- RLT will help brighten and tighten your skin, making you look years younger! Other anti-ageing benefits of red light therapy include the reduction of under-eye wrinkles, forehead wrinkles, laugh lines, and crow's feet.
In a study involving 136 people, most participants noticed fewer wrinkles and fine lines, smoother skin, and improved skin appearance after using RLT. Ultrasound images of collagen (what scientists use to measure collagen in the skin) taken before and after treatment revealed significantly improved collagen density.
2. Reduction of Scars and Stretch Marks
In addition to facial benefits, red light therapy can also aid in reducing scars and stretch marks. By promoting the formation of normal, healthy skin cells, RLT can improve your skin's overall appearance, leaving it soft and smooth.
While RLT does not guarantee complete removal of scars and stretch marks, it has been shown to lighten them and reduce associated redness. However, RLT is an excellent preventive measure. Its effects on wound healing and collagen production can prevent future scars and stretch marks. Given all these benefits, it's no wonder RLT should be part of everyone's skincare routine.
3. Skin Health: Treatment of Acne, Psoriasis, and Rosacea
Are you struggling with chronic skin issues like acne, psoriasis, or rosacea?
Red light therapy can help you. Its collagen-producing properties support the growth of new, healthier skin tissue. It can also help repair damage caused by UV radiation and excessive sun exposure. Stop acne outbreaks. People commonly use red light therapy to eliminate acne.
RLT offers immense benefits for your skin and can boost your confidence. Several scientific studies have demonstrated how RLT can be successfully used to treat acne, as RLT works by reducing inflammation and sebum production, making it a great way to not only manage the last breakout but also prevent future ones. In other words, RLT can reduce skin redness and ensure sebum does not clog your pores.
For many people, it's even more appealing that RLT is a natural remedy with no side effects and is well-tolerated by all skin types! No harsh chemicals are needed.
- Treatment of Psoriasis and Rosacea
While red light therapy for psoriasis treatment is still being researched, preliminary results are very promising. In one study, researchers used RLT on people with chronic psoriasis resistant to conventional treatment. Within just four to five weeks, most of them improved by 60-100% [3]. For rosacea, most studies focus on red light with blue light, not just red light. People exposed to both reported significantly less redness, itching, and burning after five weeks. However, many people report successful rosacea treatment using red light therapy.
Overall, when it comes to improving skin cell health, RLT is a promising alternative to conventional treatments. Scientific evidence suggests that while RLT is effective on its own, it is best used in conjunction with blue light.
4. Hair Loss: Grow Healthier and Stronger Hair
Red light therapy presents a great alternative to hair loss medications. Recent human studies have shown that red light therapy can improve hair growth by more than 35% in men and women with androgenic alopecia.
And the best part?
No side effects or issues have been reported. RLT works with your body, stimulating its natural growth processes instead of imposing changes like many medications do. However, it's important to note that RLT is not a miracle hair growth device. If you are already bald, RLT will not regrow your hair. This treatment technique requires your hair follicles to be alive to work.
5. Weight Loss: Shed Stubborn Fat and Cellulite
Weight loss can be challenging. Results are slow, and it can often be discouraging to see the same number on the scale week after week. You may have tried some of the popular "weight loss" supplements or "guaranteed" weight loss exercise programs and achieved unsatisfactory results. Or you may have seen some initial results, but the pounds quickly returned.
Whatever the case, red light therapy can be a great addition to your weight loss journey. Clinical studies have shown that RLT can reduce fat and cellulite. Although it is not yet exactly known "how", the main theory is that RLT creates small openings in fat cells, causing lipids (molecules inside fat cells) to leak out.
In one particular study, participants who underwent RLT experienced an average waist circumference reduction of 2.15 cm (0.85 inches) after two 30-minute sessions per week for four weeks. These individuals were not asked to change their diet or exercise habits, so the results were not due to more exercise or healthier eating. At first glance, 0.85 inches may not seem like much, but it was just after eight RLT sessions and likely more than most people see with weight loss pills. So, although the study lasted only four weeks, imagine what longer use could mean for you!
6. Muscle Recovery: End soreness and enhance performance
Do you hate feeling sore for days after a workout? I know I always struggle to climb stairs for several days after an intense leg workout. Fortunately, red light therapy when used post-exercise can reduce delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and speed up muscle recovery. And when used pre-exercise, RLT can improve performance and endurance. You'll be able to exercise more intensely and for longer before feeling fatigued. Plus, you won't feel as sore after training as before!
Although RLT is currently allowed in athletic competitions, there is talk of a possible ban (or regulation) of its use [12]. So if you're an athlete, make sure to check the official list of banned substances in case there are any changes.
Red Light Therapy vs. Cold Water Immersion Therapy
Both red light therapy and cold water immersion therapy (CWIT) are used by athletes to speed up muscle recovery post-training. An example of CWIT is immersion in an ice water bath (which can be quite cold and uncomfortable!).
7. Red light boosts fertility
In men, red light therapy can improve sperm volume, motility, and survival. Modern men need this support, especially as fertility levels have been declining for several decades.
Fortunately, red light therapy doesn't just benefit men...
In women, nearly 25% of severely infertile women became pregnant after red light therapy treatment, which is a huge increase in fertility.
There are indications that red light therapy even improves egg quality and slows down (any) decline in female fertility.
