As hormone levels drop, skin can become dry, sagging, and thin. Dry skin is actually a result of declining oestrogen levels in the bloodstream at the onset of menopause. Oestrogen stimulates the production of collagen and oils in the body, keeping the skin naturally hydrated for most of a woman's life. Menopause reduces the amount of ceramides in the stratum corneum, ceramides are lipids (fats) that are naturally found in high concentrations in the outermost layers of the skin. With the decline in hormone levels, skin can become dry, sagging, and thin. Skin cell renewal decreases during this period with lower levels of skin sebum, so the complexion can appear dull and lack vitality if not properly cared for.
