The antioxidant effects of astaxanthin are remarkable. Its effectiveness is due to the shape and length of the molecule, which is soluble in both water and fats. The molecule penetrates the cell walls of the eyes well, as well as the blood-brain barrier.
Astaxanthin also does not turn into a pro-oxidant. Notably, astaxanthin can process several (up to 19) free radicals at once (most other antioxidants only 1). These properties distinguish astaxanthin from most antioxidants.
